About Us

Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) is one of the main Christian denominations in Kenya, with significant membership in Uganda, Tanzania, and progressively growing in other countries in the region.

PCEA is part of the Holy Catholic (Universal) Church; worshipping God Almighty, All-wise, and All-loving, in the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As a church, we embrace Biblical and Historic Christianity as expressed in the Old and New Testaments and subscribe to the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds. We affirm the five tenets of the Protestant Reformation: Scripture alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, In Christ Alone, and to God Alone Be The Glory.

PCEA has about 4 million members, over 3,200 congregations, 500 parishes, and 61 presbyteries in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Members of this church are spread beyond East Africa and across the globe.

We are an ecumenical church with membership in the National Council of Churches Kenya, All African Council of Churches, World Council of Churches, and World Council of Reformed Churches. We are involved in many other ecumenical endeavors within East Africa and across the world.

Our worship and church governance system is founded/based on reformed theology and is exercised through Parish Sessions, Presbyteries, Regional Councils, and the General Assembly.

Our History

PCEA history dates back to the year 1891 when missionaries from Scotland arrived in Kibwezi and established a mission under the name “East African Scottish Mission”. The first temporary Church was established at Kibwezi together with the first School with two pupils in 1892.

In 1898, the missionaries led by Thomas Watson moved the mission station from Kibwezi to Dagoretti with the name “Church of Scotland Mission”. In 1899 the mission moved to Thogoto in Kikuyu.

After Mr. Watson’s death in 1900, Church of Scotland assumed general management of the mission. In 1907 Dr. John W. Arthur arrived to take over medical works from Dr. Uffman and in 1908 Hunter Memorial Hospital (now PCEA Kikuyu Hospital) was opened.

In 1913 a group led by Dr Arthur arrived at Thuchi river in Meru to survey the area for church work and in 1916, 3 missionaries were sent to spread the mission to the Meru people.

A form of Church government was set up in 1920 and Elders were ordained. Parish Sessions were formed for the Congregations of Kikuyu, Tumutumu and St. Andrew’s, Nairobi. The Presbytery of British East Africa was instituted to exercise jurisdiction over the Congregations. In the same year, the ordination of the first Kirk Sessions took place in Kikuyu. The First African Clergy ordination took place in 1926 and Alliance High School was started. Construction of the Church of the Torch at Kikuyu began in 1928 and was dedicated in 1933.

PCEA as it is today, was formed in 1956 upon conclusion of a merger between the Gospel Missionary Society and the Church of Scotland Mission with a view to seeking a basis for uniting all Presbyterian work in East Africa into one Church. The first General Assembly in 1956 signified the beginning of a successful journey of growth in mission and ministry.
