Office Of The Secretary General

The General Assembly appoints a Secretary General who is responsible for the administrative and day-to-day duties in the running of the Office of the General Assembly.

The Secretary General shall be the executive officer of the Church in ensuring that all Standing Committees of the General Assembly, as well as Presbyteries or regional councils, take necessary actions on the deliberations referred to them by the G.A, the G.A.C or the Business Committee.

The term of office for the Secretary General shall be for six years in the first instance, unless the General Assembly decides otherwise.

About The Secretary General

Rev. Dr. Robert Waihenya is the current Secretary General of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, a position he has served since 2021.

Rev. Dr. Robert Waihenya grew up in a humble Christian background in Githunguri. He attended PCEA Matuguta Primary School, Githiga High school, and later pursued Law at the University of Nairobi. He served as a youth secretary at PCEA Matuguta church and was also elected as youth secretary across the parish and presbytery. In the year 2000, after serving in the legal profession for four years, Rev. Robert Waihenya responded to his long-time calling into the Holy Ministry.

He joined Presbyterian University of East Africa for a Bachelor in Theology and later did his pastoral practical at Ndeiya Parish under the mentorship of Rev. Mukuru Mbore. He was Licensed and posted at the new Ngarariga Parish of the then Limuru Presbytery where he served for four years. He was later posted at Mbagathi Parish where he served for five years.

He holds two Masters Degrees, one in Pastoral Theology by the Catholic University of Eastern Africa and the second Masters degree was awarded by the Columbia Theological Seminary in the USA. After his return to Kenya, he served at PCEA Ihururu Parish in Nyeri hill presbytery, where he also served as the Presbytery Moderator.

He was later appointed as the first director of Mission and BSR department at the Head Office. He was involved in various projects including water for Mission, friends for Mission, and ‘The Way’ magazine.

As the Secretary General, Rev. Dr. Waihenya is responsible for guiding the church on matters administration, oversees the day-to-day running of the church, operations of the head office and acts as an advisor to the moderator on constitutional matters.

He envisions a church that is is progressive and impactful, more embracive to the young people and more sensitive to matters justice.
