Christian Education is a transformational agent that covers the home, church, school/institutions, and society in general with the role to advise, facilitate, sensitize, intervene, educate, and represent. Its chief missionary task for the Church is teaching, discipleship, and equipping the learner to become like Christ.

Christian Education is defined as a Bible-based, Holy Spirit-empowered (Christ-centered) teaching/learning process. It seeks to guide individuals at all levels of growth through contemporary teaching means toward knowing and experiencing God’s purpose and plan through Christ in every aspect of living. It equips people for effective ministry, with the overall focus on Christ the Master Educator’s example, and his command to make disciples. It helps people to manage transitions properly covering the span from ‘womb to tomb’.

CE is the quality assurance (in terms of the application of Biblical principles) arm of the Church including her institutions and departments. As such, CE works with all the groups and committees.

“God is calling us to lead in a pluralistic, relativistic, materialistic society that has even distorted the very meaning of truth.” Through Christian Education, the truth can be re-defined in line with the Word of God.

We endeavour to make disciples by instilling knowledge through Education for life.

To have a society which has children and adults who are God-fearing and uphold the Christian values of love, moral integrity, self-control, and respect.

‘My People are destroyed from lack of knowledge’ (Hosea 4:6)

“My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children”.

In the Strategic Planning process of the PCEA Head Office which is in the process of being rolled out, among the many areas of opportunity and growth the following directions have been identified: –

Strategic Objective: To transform the Church, Families, Relationships, and Society through TEACHING Christ-Centred Knowledge.

About nine Strategic Initiatives have been identified among them: –

  1. Entrench and Expand PPI (Program for Pastoral Instruction) in learning Institutions. There are materials available from Head Office (prepared by Scripture Union in conjunction with the Churches amongst them PCEA) for Class one to Eight. These will be aligned with time to comply with the CBC model. Pastoral materials for high school are in the process of being developed.
  2. Establish and Expand Chaplaincy service in Institutions – Learning Institutions, Hospitals, Financial Institutions, Industries, Airports/Aviation, Transport (Motorbikes, Tuktuks, matatus, buses, lorries etc), etc.
  3. Design and Implement Comprehensive Family Programs – Courtship, Pre-marital counseling, Parenting, Domestic Workers program, Widows/Widowers, Orphans, Singles, Senior Citizens etc
  4. Establish and Initiate Christian Professional Fellowships – Teachers, Lawyers, Accountants, etc

The Constitutional mandate for Christian Education is in Chapter 27 – Acts Constituting Standing Committees and particularly ACT 19 (Pages 305-312). In a summary…

19.4:  Education is a vital asset in which to invest for the building of the Nation.

19.5:  The Church is concerned about Education in its life and work. The Church promotes education for the total well-being of the Nation and its people.

19.109: CE pays special attention to the teaching of Christian Religious Education in schools as well as drawing the attention of those concerned with the pastoral needs of our education institutions.

19.111: CE shall be a link with the outside bodies that work and demonstrate support as far as possible for service to the people.

19.112: CE shall seek to educate, inform, and alert the Church about educational development, develop and maintain active interest for the welfare of educational institutions.

19.113: Christian Education understands as its responsibility the relevance of the Christian faith and tradition to social, political, and economic issues and enhance of moral Christian values among the people by every means possible.

We could also add another mandate from The Great Commission (Mathew 28:19-20) where the last instruction is to TEACH, and the Great Commandment (Luke 10:27) where LOVE is the DOING part of our Christian Faith.
