PCEA Chogoria Hospital to launch a cancer unit

It is yet another milestone for the Church as PCEA Chogoria Hospital launches the Oncology (cancer) Unit on Friday 4th October 2024.

The launching event will be led by the Moderator of PCEA General Assembly Rt. Rev. Thegu Mutahi culminating a two-year project that sought to establish the first oncology facility in Tharaka Nithi County.

The establishment of the oncology unit represents a major milestone in the hospital’s vision to offer specialized healthcare and training, aligning with its goals to become a leading regional medical center.

The unit is a result of the collective efforts of the Board of Management, the hospital administration team, partners, and the unwavering support from the local community. It aims at providing much-needed chemotherapy services, significantly expanding access to specialized cancer care within the region.

This is yet another stride for PCEA Chogoria Hospital which has provided medical services to the region since it was founded in 1922 by Scottish Missionaries. Ownership of the hospital was transferred from the Church of Scotland to the Presbyterian Church of East Africa in 1956.

Apart from providing medical services, the hospital trains medical personnel through its Clive Irvine College of Nursing which was started in 1951 and named in honour of the hospital founder Dr. Clive Irvine.

The new oncology unit will address a critical healthcare gap, providing quality cancer care close to home and reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in the region. It will also widen the scope of medical care provided by the PCEA Church through her mission hospitals that include PCEA Kikuyu Hospital and PCEA Tumutumu Hospital.
