PCEA Moderator’s remarks on the issues affecting Kenyans
The Moderator of 24th General Assembly of PCEA Church Rt. Rev. Thegu Mutahi, has joined other church leaders in calling on the government over the issues facing Kenyans.
The Moderator expressed concern over the ongoing migration from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). While the government portrays progress, many patients are still unable to access healthcare in hospitals, with others suffering at home. He reiterated his earlier remarks in September, emphasizing that the confusion surrounding the transition could have been better managed.
Further, the Moderator also raised issues with the new university funding model, stating it could lead to discrimination in education. He urged the government to shelve the model until it is thoroughly re-evaluated, advocating for public university students to access full scholarships or non-segmented financial support.
With regards to the ongoing lecturers’ strike in public universities, the moderator noted the adverse effects on students, including delays in completing their courses. He called on the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to resolve the issue promptly.
In addition, the Moderator observed that the government has acted swiftly on issues of political interest, such as impeachment of the former Deputy President and stated that it should engage the same speed while addressing issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.
On a positive however, the Moderator applauded the government for its efforts in recruiting Junior Secondary School (JCC) teachers, describing it as a step in the right direction.
